Motor control panels play an important role in industrial machinery, manufacturing equipment and production processes. They bring together the electrical components needed to start, stop, protect and control electric motors, helping machinery operate safely and reliably.
Modern Drives & Controls designs and manufactures bespoke industrial control panels for a wide range of applications. From straightforward motor starter panels to more complex systems incorporating inverter drives, braking equipment and machine control interfaces, we can build panels around the requirements of the equipment and the application.
What Is a Motor Control Panel?
A motor control panel houses the electrical components used to operate and protect one or more electric motors. Depending on the application, it may control a single motor or coordinate several motors working together as part of a machine or production process.
The panel provides a central point for motor operation, electrical protection and control. It can incorporate manual controls, automatic operation, safety devices and interfaces with other machine equipment.
The design of each panel depends on the motors being controlled, how the machinery operates and the requirements of the wider electrical system.

Common Types of Motor Control
Different applications require different methods of starting and controlling an electric motor. The appropriate solution depends on factors such as motor size, starting requirements, load characteristics and the level of control needed.
Direct-on-Line (DOL) Starters
A direct-on-line starter connects a motor directly to the electrical supply when it is switched on. DOL starting is a straightforward and widely used method for applications where the motor can tolerate the associated starting current and the machinery does not require controlled acceleration.
DOL starters are commonly used for pumps, fans, conveyors and other industrial equipment.
Star-Delta Starters
Star-delta starting reduces the current drawn during motor starting compared with direct-on-line starting. The motor initially starts in star and then changes to delta for normal operation.
This method is suitable for certain motors and applications where reduced starting current is required, provided the motor and load characteristics allow it. It does not provide continuously variable speed control.
Inverter Drives
Inverter drives, also known as variable frequency drives (VFDs), control the speed of a suitable AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to it.
They can provide controlled acceleration and deceleration, adjustable operating speed and improved process control. Depending on the application, they may also help reduce energy consumption, particularly where equipment does not need to run continuously at full speed.
Inverter drives are often incorporated into motor control panels for conveyors, pumps, fans, mixers and specialist machinery.
Soft Starters
Soft starters control the voltage applied to a motor during starting and, where supported, stopping. They can reduce starting current and mechanical shock without providing the full range of speed control available from an inverter drive.
They can be appropriate where a motor normally runs at a fixed speed but needs a more controlled start.
What Components Can a Motor Control Panel Contain?
The components used in a panel depend on its purpose and complexity. A typical industrial motor control panel may include:
-
Contactors to switch motors and other electrical loads.
-
Overload protection to protect motors against sustained excessive current.
-
Circuit protection to help protect electrical circuits against faults.
-
Isolators to provide a means of isolating equipment from its electrical supply.
-
Relays and control devices to manage operating sequences and electrical signals.
-
Inverter drives or soft starters where controlled starting or variable-speed operation is required.
-
Safety devices appropriate to the machinery and its risk assessment.
-
Power supplies and control interfaces for sensors, PLCs, operator controls and other equipment where required.
Not every panel needs all these components. Good panel design means selecting equipment to suit the application, rather than adding unnecessary complexity.
Motor Braking and Stopping
Some machines need more than simply switching a motor off. They may need to stop within a particular time, hold a load in position or prevent unwanted movement when the motor is not running.
Depending on the application, a motor control panel may incorporate electrical braking through an inverter drive, a motor-mounted electromagnetic brake or associated braking equipment.
These arrangements serve different purposes. For example, a motor brake may be used to hold a load when power is removed, while inverter braking may help control the motor's deceleration. The correct arrangement depends on the machine, the load and the required stopping behaviour.
Modern Drives & Controls has experience with specialist motor and braking solutions, including modified brake motors and control panels incorporating braking equipment.
Controlling One Motor or Multiple Motors
A simple panel may control a single motor, while a larger system may operate several motors as part of one machine or process.
Multiple-motor panels can incorporate individual motor starters, inverter drives, protection and control circuits. They may also coordinate operation through relays, PLCs or other control equipment, depending on the requirements.
The design needs to consider how the motors interact, whether they operate independently or in sequence, and what should happen if a motor trips or a fault occurs.
Bespoke Motor Control Panels for Industrial Machinery
Standard motor control arrangements do not suit every application. Machinery manufacturers and industrial users may need panels built around specific equipment, operating sequences, installation constraints or existing electrical designs.
A bespoke panel can be developed around the required motor-control method, component layout, electrical drawings and machine interfaces.
Modern Drives & Controls manufactures bespoke industrial control panels for process, manufacturing, food-processing and specialist machinery applications. We can work from customer drawings and specifications, building the panel to suit the requirements provided.
Our experience includes panels incorporating inverter drives, motor control and braking systems, as well as specialist control panels for machinery.
New Panels and Replacement Control Systems
A new machine may require a control panel designed around its motors and operating requirements. Existing machinery may also need a replacement panel because the original equipment is obsolete, damaged or no longer suitable for the application.
Replacing a panel does not automatically mean replacing the entire machine. Depending on the condition of the equipment and the requirements of the application, it may be possible to retain existing motors and other machinery while replacing or updating the control system.
Careful assessment is important. Electrical interfaces, motor characteristics, safety requirements and the way the machine operates all need to be considered before deciding on the best approach.
What Should You Consider When Specifying a Motor Control Panel?
The information required will vary with the application, but useful starting points include:
-
The number and type of motors to be controlled.
-
Motor power, voltage and rated current.
-
How each motor needs to start, stop and operate.
-
Whether variable speed or braking is required.
-
The sequence of operation and any automatic control requirements.
-
Safety functions and machine interfaces.
-
The installation environment and enclosure requirements.
-
Existing electrical drawings, where available.
For a replacement panel, photographs of the existing equipment and copies of available drawings can also help establish the requirements.
